Paul Bailey, owner of Sudie’s restaurants, and Friendswood attorney Tony Buzbee have announced resolution of Bailey’s claim related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
“The spill created a perception that seafood from the Gulf wasn't safe to eat. Any business that serves any seafood from the Gulf as a significant part of the menu, like Sudie’s, was shown to have suffered losses in annual revenues due to the spill,” Buzbee said.
Buzbee and Caroline Adams of The Buzbee Law Firm in Houston represented Sudie’s as the claim was processed through the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF), rather than through traditional litigation.
“This process was a win-win for all involved. Our lawyers and the GCCF found a sensible resolution without litigation,” Bailey said.
“We value our relationships with BP and the oil and gas industry and want to extend our thanks to them and the GCCF for their responsiveness. We’re happy to refocus our efforts on serving delicious seafood and homemade Southern dishes,” he added.
Bailey operates Sudie’s Catfish House in Pasadena and Sudie’s Seafood House in League City.
“By working through the GCCF, the Bailey family paid less in attorney’s fees and resolved the claim in less time than if they had pursued litigation.
“There’s a time and place for litigation, but the GCCF resolved the claim quicker and at a lower cost,” Buzbee said.
Buzbee said there is now a global settlement of more than $7.8 billion for those businesses damaged and there is still time for those impacted to participate in the settlement.
